Backup for Geeks

Scoble was raving about the Mirra this week. Sometimes I wonder if he just likes hardware or software because he can get the manufacturer to blog. The Mirra device seems to be very overpriced for what is, basically a NAS. $399 for 80Gb? Mirra is positioning their device as an office backup system. Great, there's a gap in the market there, but is it really suitable as it only backups up documents? Mirra says "Ever tried to restore a crashed computer?". Yes, been there, done that, and having the contents of "My Documents" is not a great help. An office...

Hacking web sites for fun and profit

So DeveloperDeveloperDeveloper is done and dusted. It was the first time I've given a presentation on how to hack web sites; I now await the results of the speaker score sheets. As if presenting wasn't stressful enough <g>. Unfortunately I didn't have as much time for questions and answers as I would have wished, but the wireless mic was rather fun. For those that are interested and can't wait till my presentation appears on the conference web site (Craig is stuck in a hotel with just a modem connection) I've uploaded the powerpoint deck and sample code. Remember don't try this...

64bit? That's 64 bits per second isn't it?

Nice to see The Times understanding technology; Mr Gates confirmed that the new version of Windows, codenamed Longhorn, would enable computers to process data at 64 bits per second, compared with the current standard of 32 bits per second. Somehow, even though Microsoft's publicity machine can produce ridiculous statements (and I'm not including Scoble in that <g>), I do doubt the statement's attribution to BillG. [28-04-05] It appears The Times realised how inept that reporting was and have changed the page so the attributed comment actually makes sense. [04-05-05] I've scanned a copy of the article (with the mast head pasted above it showing...

Some thoughts on UK election day.

I happen to live in a constituency where our Member of Parliament is rather high profile. Setting aside the general campaigning which, as usual, seems to revolve around Labour and the Conservatives attacking the respective opposition leaders and the Liberal Democrats trying desperately to rise about it all and thus having a lack lustre performance in the media; there's the undercurrent of "Why won't people vote?" This year the leafleting and canvassing to me was minimal (aside from a Tory manifesto in the post from Melissa, Boris's parliamentary Girl Friday after I mentioned I had had nothing from the Tory...

Phil forks .Text

Phil is forking .Text If you've ever caught yourself throwing your hands in the air and declaring that you're going to write your own blogging engine from scratch, Subtext is going to be for you And my, do I regret that decision sometimes as I never seem to find time to add the features I want. For a long time I manually wrote the XML for each blog entry on this site and copied it into the right directory on the server. I have to admit being peeved at CS, it's just too big and ugly and the seperate projects have...

The Internet Explorer branding kit is evil.

My mother finally got DSL and eventually managed to get it configured, after putting the microfilters in the wrong place. However every time she tried to send an email it prompted her for a password and failed. That wasn't how I left it. The problem arose because Wannadoo decided they would override every setting I configured with their own mail server settings and branding, setting itself as the default over her existing email address. Even worse it added an advertisement bar to Outlook Express. She's paying for the DSL, why should she get adverts when she reads email? To remove...
