The main speaker will be Guy Smith-Ferrier with a session on Visual Studio 2008 Tips and Tricks.  As usual the NxtGenUG activities of eating pizza and swag overdosing will take place.  To book your...

nxtgenug Oxford: Helen Emerson on JSON

Monday sees Helen Emerson come out to Oxford to present on JSON, her very well received session first deliver at DDD. The object model in Javascript looks pretty foreign the first time you see it, particularly if you're from mainstream languages like C#, Java or VB.NET. In my talk I'm going to explore the Javascript object model, talk about the bread and butter things you need to know to create classes and objects and show you how to get the most out of some of the more exotic Javascript object features like prototyping. As...

nxtgenug Fest 08; goodbye to the Moth

FEST08 the annual NxtGenUG one-day event takes place at Microsoft Reading on Thursday 12th June (just a few days after my birthday, so bring presents).  As ever it’s going to be an action packed day with great content from the likes of Mike Taulty ,Oliver Sturm , Dave Sussman and other top speakers. There is a cast iron guarantee that there will be no Information Card sessionsbut there will be swathes of swag and prizes and pizza (it wouldn’t be a nxtgen event without those).  There are a few places left; it’s free to all NxtGenUG members and a mere...

Upcoming Events

There’s a range of events coming up in the next few months; In February we’ve got Guy Smith-Ferrier coming to nxtgen Oxford to talk about Astoria ADO.NET Data Services, and a nugget from a new speaker, Marc Gravell on adding operators to generics. If you want to come along please register first, it makes my life easier. What:Ahhh, Ahh, AstoriaThe emergence of Web 2.0 technologies has brought new opportunities and caused us to solve old problems in new ways. nxtgenug Oxford : Daniel Moth introduces VS2008 and .NET 3.5

Just a reminder that Daniel Moth, renowned (should that be infamous?) Microsoft DPE speaker is coming to introduce us to Visual Studio 2008 and v3.5 of the .NET framework on Monday. Daniel is always good value; and, of course, attendance is free, so register and sign up on the nxtgen website so we know you’re coming. What:VS2008 and .NET 3.5Want to know how Visual Studio 2008 differs from every single previous release of Visual Studio? Do the terms "red bits" and "green bits" confuse you? Are you having a hard time finding what exactly is new in the...

Follow the nxtgen usergroup on twitter

Ah web 2.0 marketing; I’ve just setup a twitter account for nxtgen; it will pull in and tweet events, news and podcasts. Unfortunately this means you may see things like the ReadyBoost song for which I can only apologise. I would exhort you to follow the nxtgen account; but as Dave and Rich spread the nxtgen tentacles far and wide I’m worried about the use of "follow"; as one day soon I expect to be presented with a minion uniform to wear and I’ll be forced to stand behind Dave whilst he webcasts (using Office Live Meeting of course) demanding...

nxtgenug Oxford : All aboard the MonoRail

This month we have Ian Cooper, founder of the London .NET User Group coming out to the home counties  to talk about MonoRail, comparing and contrasting with Ruby on Rails. We also have a new nugget volunteer, Steven Wilmot talking on how to read in C# (I guess bribing with numerous pairs of socks is finally working!) What:All Aboard The MonorailIs it a bird? Is it a plane? No it’s Ian Cooper trying to stay on the Rails. Arriving by normal railway probably, Ian Cooper, London .NET User Group Leader, Speaker and long standing member of the UK Community...

nxtgen spreads its tentacles further.

We’re insidious you know.  Two months, two new regions, first Cambridge now Southampton. Yes, the Next Generation User Group (NxtGenUG) is expanding faster than my waist line after working at Microsoft for a week and this time they’re heading south.  The latest and warmest region of NxtGenUG is Southampton.  The region is being organised and run by John McLoughlin and Rick Allen two local guys who have sourced a venue, projector, screen, pizza, swag and speakers all on their ownsome - all that a User Group needs or could ask for! As ever when a new NxtGenUG region opens...

nxtgenug: Nothing but Jean Paul Boodhoo

On the suggestion of one of our members, Adrian Sutcliffe (nxtgenug - the listening usergroup *grin*) we grabbed Jean Paul Boodhoo as soon as he got off the plane from the US, putting him in the boot of my card and dragging him out to Oxford. Jean Paul is taking time out from his "Nothing but .NET" course in London to come out and cover the fundamentals of .NET programming. Not to be missed. What:Nothing But Jean Paul BoodhooInternational renowed presenter Jean Paul Boodhoo covers loads of fundamentals of .NET programming. If you’re programming with .NET, don’t miss it. Nuff...

Duck Typing nugget

Last night I gave a nugget on Duck Typing. The presentation deck is available, the library I talked about is from http://www.deftflux.net/blog/page/Duck-Typing-Project.aspx. What’s a nugget you say? Well at nxtgenug we encourage our members to stand up and talk, if only to allow them to escape hearing Chris, Dave, Rich, myself or any of the other organisers for months on end. The topics can be what you like, the length can be between 5 and 15 minutes. It’s a gentle introduction to speaking. Want to try? Then let us know, we’ll give you as much help as you want or need ...  Technorati...

Swag comes to Cambridge; nxtgen expands further afield.

Over the weekend Rich and Dave announced the opening of a brand new NxtGenUG region - this time in Cambridge.  So now developers can make their way over the fens and boards of East Anglia can gather together to learn, chat, eat Pizza and get prizes thrown at them in copious quantities. The region will be run by Chris Hay and Allister Frost who live and work in the area.  Chris and Allister have put in a great deal of effort to get the region off of the ground including securing a fantastic venue, courtesy of non-other than Microsoft Research...

nxtgenug: Win a ticket to TechEd update.

So I’ve been neglecting the technical blogging for a while (whilst I try to compete some demo code of a full working Information Card Identity Provider, you know how it is, you write code, then realise that it’s probably not clear enough, and keep looping around). However the nxtgenug TechEd competition has also been sucking my time. Part of the benefit of being a branch organiser is that, well, I get a few more goes that normal, not that I can win of course. So, I went rather mad, with the aim of wiping out entire countries (and a continent);...

nxtgenug takes swag to the next step; Win a ticket to TechEd

It’s not just socks, t-shirts and software you know; NxtGenUG is offering one lucky winner a ticket to Microsoft’s premier European developer conference : TechEd Developers in Barcelona : November 5th – 9th 2007. To be in with a chance to win the ticket register on the NxtGenUG site and enter the TechEd ticket treasure hunt. [Terms and conditions apply]. Visit the NxtGenUG TechEd home page for more details... I doubt organisers can enter though; otherwise I would view it as a swag gathering tip, errrrr, useful technical conference. Technorati tags: nxtgenug, competition, TechEd

Winner Of The Best Presentation 2006/2007

It was the NxtGen Fest07 event yesterday; but client work meant I couldn't attend, which also meant I couldn't pick up my award for Best Presentation, Oxford. Chris Seary picked it up on my behalf and (I am told) attempted to give my acceptance speech in an Irish accent (below). Someone please tell me you videoed it. Obviously would have loved to be there today; but unfortunately I’m filming the next Bond movie in the Bahamas right now, as you can see from the back drop on this video link. Actually I don’t know what the award...

NxtGenUG on Channel9

If you've never seen Rich, John or Dave in action, or you wonder what the fuss about NxtGenUG is all about then you can see the terrible threesome in action; channel9 visited our Coventry NxtGenUG meeting at the start of this year, which we held inside the Argosy Cargo Plane at the Midland Air Museum in Coventry. There are three videos: In the first John Price gives Charles the low down on the group and the museum. In the second, Richard Costall interviews NxtGenUG members: Ray Starkey, Stuart Wells, Geff Lombardi, Andrew Jacks and James Coulter. Finally we get to...

Reminder : nxtgenfest 07

Yes, I got to conferences I don't speak at (although this time I'm a helper monkey). Time is running out to register at the discount rate (tomorrow); or of course you could simply join the Next Generation User Group and come for FREE! It'll be worth it for the swag, I emptied the DPE cupboard of goodies last night ... What's FEST07 all about?  It’s all about “Into The Future …”.  We’ll start the day in the present, looking at Vista, and then we’ll jump forward a few months to take a look at LINQ, a great and innovative...
