An Introduction to Information Card

Today saw DDD5 and deliver of my updated presentation on InfoCard CardSpace Information Card, which was rapidly updated this morning to include the new Information Card logo, and the ASP.NET Kit, as announced by Mike Jones a couple of days back. I did look at the HTML kit as well, but, err, the documentation is somewhat lacking. I think I know what parts of it down, but I'm still at a loss to explain why I need a toast style popup. The reaction to the logo was rather muted by developers and also derision from a designer in the...

asp.net validators for ajax, finally, sort of, maybe.

During the betas of Atlas Microsoft provided an update for the asp.net validators which allowed them to work in update panels, at release time these vanished much to the consternation of most people. ScottGu ("All hail ScottGu") promised a patch to ASP.NET would be forthcoming, and in the mean time Microsoft published source for sample validators. 6 months later, and still no sign of the patch on WindowsUpdate but it has appeared as a hotfix on Microsoft Connect (not that the Knowledge Base article linked to on the download page, or the extra  KB article linked to in the readme inside the...

IMTC: "Hacking websites for fun and profit"

I say "umm" a lot. The sessions at the Irish Microsoft Technology Conference were recorded. You can see mine on askasqlguru.com (stop laughing Tony, I know I'm not a SQL guru, Niall Flanagan is and asked Chuck Boyce to host them). Maybe it's the whole listening to your own voice thing, but I've never seen myself present and I'm cringing. A lot. I can only apologise to those who attended and didn't enjoy it or take anything useful away. Technorati tags: IMTC

How not to poach

So I just had an email from one of work's rivals. It's a pretty small market at our level; above us you have the big consultancies, at the middle tier where we are there's really only a couple of other companies covering the same area competing for the same customers. It appears one of our rivals has gotten a copy of the Exchange address book, as they've slimed myself, everyone working here at the current client (including someone who is rather new, and so doesn't have his work email published anywhere) and even slimed management. What's more amusing is they...

CardSpace finally has a logo

Since I started presenting about CardSpace I've been bemoaning the lack of a logo. Finally, via an announcement on Richard Turner's blog it's here; We’re delighted to announce the immediate availability of the Information Card Logo. You’re free to use this logo (in accordance with the accompanying guidelines) to provide a clear, consistent visual cue to your users that your sites and applications support Information Cards. This will make it easier for users to recognize how and where to sign-in to your site and enjoy the ease-of-use and safety of Information Cards. The branding is available in the "Information...

Windows Home Server RC1

Well that installation was faster; and look there on the right, a new image which greets you when you open the web site for remote browsing, which shows that WHS is fun for all the family; Actually the real pain was having to backup my music before installing, as RC1 doesn't upgrade from betas and wipes the hard drive (testers did receive a bunch of warnings this was going to happen) and the trick to avoid having to use Microsoft's idea of strong passwords on my user account no longer works. You can add the user to the Remote Desktop Users group...

Recruiter fun and games

Dear Recruiters, it's generally not acceptable to spam someone with unsuitable jobs at their work address which you managed to work out because it's in the format of firstname.lastname@example.com; I just got slimed. You expect recruiters to use the phone list, it's easy enough to brush off, but when they spam your work email address with jobs that simply aren't suitable it's a little annoying; after all my home email is easy enough to discover via goggle. So over my mid-morning coffee I drafted a reply... I have to admit to puzzlement. I'd never give my work email to...

Pose nicely for the camera kids.

After my speaking engagements in Ireland (I know I'm being slack, I'll blog about the conferences once my exam tomorrow is done) I drove up to the parents for my birthday and demanded cake. On Saturday I took the niece and nephews to the beach; where I tried to get them to pose nicely for a photo for my mother .... That's not posing nicely. Is that seaweed? No Christmas presents this year then. I hate them. Obviously. Technorati tags: Ireland, White Rocks, Family

Simple Windows Live Writer manifest for Subtext

Tim Heuer built a simple manifest for the new beta of Windows Live Writer (which has a UK dictionary, worth it for that alone). With his permission I took his image, and put it into the trunk along with a manifest. From that I'll be building the parts of the Wordpress API that make sense for Subtext, the ability to add and edit categories being the primary one, as well as some custom buttons for WLM for statistics and comments, as well as direct links to on-line editing. In the mean time you can grab the manifest and supporting images yourself, put...
